NEWARK, N.J. --- After a two hour flight to the United States, the Bermuda Hogges felt the jetlag as the Ironbound Express got back in the win column with an impressive 5-0 victory over their Mid-Atlantic division foe at Lubetkin Field in NJIT on Thursday evening.
The Ironbound Express, who entered the contest winless in its previous two contests, got on the board in the opening minute of the contest, as forward John Sallhag beat Bermuda netminder Freddy Hall. The Express added another goal 10 minutes later, when defender Chris Karcz came up to blast a shot past Hall, as the Express took an early 2-0 lead.
Later in the first half, Jerrod Laventure found the back of the net, as the Express claimed a 3-0 lead. The last time the Express had a three goal lead was back on May 19th in a 3-0 edge over Ocean City.
In the squad’s fifth shutout of the season, the Ironbound defense allowed only three shots in the first half, as goalie Michael Drozd was asked to make two saves.
Sallhag added his second goal of the contest in the 54th minute, as the Ironbound Express chased an already inured Hall from the goal. The native of Vaxjo, Sweden is in the top-10 in the PDL in points with 10 and trails the league leader Armani Walker of the Orange County Blue Stars by nine points.
As head coach George Vichniakov went to the bench for the final 25 minutes of regulation, reserve forward Renan Rodrigues scored his first goal of the year in the 80th minute past Hogges backup netminder Tahj Bell to give the team a 5-0 cushion.
The Ironbound Express finished the contest with a 15-5 edge in shots, while Drozd made four saves for his second shutout of the year.
The Ironbound Express will head to Reading, Pa. for an important three-point game against Reading United AC on Sunday, June 13th at 6:30 p.m. The Express will return back home for a derby match against Dominic Reinold and the New Jersey Rangers on Wednesday, June 16th at 8 p.m.
